Star One was recommended to me by a friend almost 10 years ago. They had great savings rates with little or no fees for almost everything else.
I've had many different accounts with them and I've almost always been happy. There was one incident with a Bill Pay check but they more than made up for it.
Here's an example of how Star One rocks:
We apply for a car loan and they try to pull almost 9% on me. We get 5.15% through Star One.
Credit cards through Capital One, Providian, etc charge upwards of 18-25%. Star One charges 8-9% with no early due date tricks and they'll even automatically draft the minimum payment from your checking account so you'll NEVER be late. I can even get cash advances with NO additional fees or penalties if needed.
Basically, they are a bank without the nickel and dimeing.

I used to LOVE Star One, but lately I have been passionately hating it. I would rather give it a 2.5 star rating because I haven't experienced MUCH better so I don't want to give it 2 stars, but it is not A-OK. It is 'OK'.
Their rates are pretty good, when I joined 4 years ago the money market savings rate was near 5%. Now it has gone down to 3.05% but that's still pretty good considering other banks (I know this because during my recent fit with Star One I started researching other banks since I hated them). The checkings account is only 3 bucks a month if you have less than $300 in it and the savings accounts are free so long as you have money in it (50 for regular savings, 5 for money market).
My recent fit with them however totally pissed me off and I give them an absolute -10 stars for customer service. They try to lie to you on the phone and tell you things about how they can't help you before they hear the details of your situation. Further, when you request to speak to the manager about it, they tell you to leave a convenient call back number and then call you back and say "the manager said that they can't do anything". Assholes! That was what drove me over the edge wanting to change banking providers.... Sadly, I couldn't find a better bank that did not charge for non-ATM transactions (from their side) and only charge $13 overdraft fees. So I am sticking with them.
